Georgian Foreign Minister thanked Finland for her support
Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb is optimistic with regard to the future of Georgia. Gregory Vashadze, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Georgia, thanked Finland for the work done as the OSCE Chairmanship. Foreign Minister Stubb met with his Georgian colleague in Helsinki on 22 April.

Alexander Stubb: The EU needs two Eastern policies
According to Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb, the war in Georgia in August changed Europe. In an interview with the Ulkopolitiikka magazine, Stubb states that the crisis is shifting the focal point of the EU towards Caucasia and Central Asia, for which reason the Union would need two Eastern policies. One policy would concern the relations with Russia and the other would cover Eastern Europe – i.e. Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus – and Southern Caucasia and Central Asian countries.

OSCE has a key role in monitoring of the ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian assistance
Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb reminded that the ceasefire in Georgia is very fragile and that the OSCE has a key role in monitoring of the ceasefire and delivery of humanitarian assistance. Stubb held a press conference about the Georgia conflict on Wednesday 13 August at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Stubb mediates South Ossetia crisis in Russia
Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Chairman-in-Office and Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, representing the EU, are today, 12 August, in Russia to negotiate about a solution to the South Ossetia crisis.

Presidential election in Georgia a step in the right direction
Democratisation in Georgia took a step in the right direction and according to preliminary reports, in general the presidential election proceeded peacefully, Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva, the current Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE and United States Congressman Alcee L. Hastings, Special Coordinator for all OSCE short-term election observers, agreed on Monday, 7 January. The official report of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, ODIHR, will be completed later.
