The new President of the Republic of Finland will be Alexander Stubb

Alexander Stubb has been elected as the new President of the Republic of Finland. The National Coalition Party candidate, Alexander Stubb, is set to assume the presidency on 1 March, defeating independent candidate Pekka Haavisto, who was supported by a voters' association and the Green party. In the second round, Alexander Stubb secured 51.6% of the votes, while Pekka Haavisto received the remaining 48.4%.


The current President of the Republic, Sauli Niinistö, extended his congratulations to the President-elect, Professor Alexander Stubb, on the election evening, which took place on Sunday, 11 February 2024. President Niinistö also had a conversation with Member of Parliament Pekka Haavisto, expressing gratitude for his excellent campaign.

Alexander Stubb's platform is centered around the principles of an "Open, Safe, and International Finland." Since 2020, Professor Stubb has served as the Director of the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence. Prior to this role, he held various positions, including Minister of Finance (2015–2016), Prime Minister (2014–2015), Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade (2011–2017), and Foreign Minister (2008–2011).

In his unifying program, Stubb emphasizes, “The world and Finland cannot be summarised in three points, but these points can serve as guidance to what I will focus on as President of the Republic over the next six years. As President, I promise to work for an open, safe and international Finland.”

The presidential inauguration is scheduled to take place in Helsinki on Friday, 1 March 2024.
