The President of SOS Femmes et Enfants Victimes de Violence Familiale (SOS FEVVF) from Niger, Mrs. Mariama Moussa, on Tuesday 6 February was celebrated at a ceremony in Finland to mark the high-profile International Gender Equality Prize. She was appointed for this recognition by the Federal Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, the recipient of first ever International Gender Equality Prize.

The International Gender Equality Prize was established by the Government of Finland as a part of the country's centenary celebrations in 2017. The objective of the prize is to promote gender equality around the world. The prize is given to a person who has advanced equality among genders. Rather than collecting the prize money, the awardee selects a cause promoting the position of girls and women to receive the prize sum of 150 000 euros.

SOS FEVVF is a non-governmental organization working to prevent violence against women and girls in Niger. It fights against all forms of domestic violence, and promotes the rights and freedoms of women and children in society. Mrs. Moussa has received several high-level awards for her work. In her video address to the award audience, Chancellor Merkel called SOS FEVVF "a beacon of hope for women and girls affected by violence".
