Due to the prevailing emergency conditions based on the Emergency Powers Act, the Government has decided to restrict traffic at Finland’s external borders starting on Thursday 19 March at 00.00. Finns travelling abroad are encouraged to return to Finland as soon as possible.

Updated Visa Code to apply from 2 February 2020
The EU is revising its Visa Code in order to facilitate visa procedures for travellers and to respond more effectively to the challenges posed by illegal migration. Finland will start applying the new Visa Code on 2 February 2020 together with other Schengen countries.

What significance does the interim decision of the International Court of Justice have for the Rohingya minority in Myanmar?
Last week, the International Court of Justice of the United Nations (ICJ) issued an interim decision in the case against Myanmar brought to the Court by The Gambia. In its application, the West African country of The Gambia argues that Myanmar has violated the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the treatment of the Rohingya minority of the country.

Finland supports the follow-on financing of the World Bank’s Decentralizing Funding to Schools Project in Myanmar. The project improves the quality of basic education in different parts of Myanmar, especially aiming to support the schooling of the most vulnerable children.

Finland promotes women’s rights in Myanmar
Finland supports the Women and Girls First Initiative run by UNFPA (The United Nations Population Fund) in the conflict zones of Myanmar. The initiative brings together sexual and reproductive health and the related women’s rights, including the prevention of and response to gender-based violence.
