EU Presidency statement on the situation in Sudan/ Darfur

The Presidency of the European Union is alarmed by the renewed fighting in areas of North Darfur and expresses its deep concern about the further deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the region. The Presidency condemns this continuing violation of the cease-fire, particularly the violence directed at the civilian population and providers of humanitarian assistance, reiterating the obligation of all parties to permit the unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance and to respect human rights.

The Presidency is also deeply concerned about the recent military build-up in Darfur and the reinforcement of the Government forces in the region. The Presidency condemns the reported military attacks by both the Sudanese government and the rebel groups.
