In June 2023, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs launched an analysis of the legal status of Russia’s Consulate in Mariehamn in the treaty structures concerning the demilitarisation of Åland. The analysis does not offer any policy recommendations or statements. Instead, it was drawn up to increase the knowledge base on the matter. The President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy have discussed the analysis.

The legal analysis examines, on the one hand, the special status of Åland under international law and, on the other hand, international law questions concerning the Russian Consulate in Mariehamn.

An English translation of the analysis will be published later in November.
