"Finland 100 babies" receive Finnish Maternity Packages
As part of the festive programme of Finland celebrating its 100 years of independence, 10 babies born in Latvia were donated a maternity package – a true social innovation of the Finnish society. The maternity package contains around different 50 items, such as clothes and care products for the baby and accessories for the mother. The project was realized in cooperation with Finnish companies Neste and Nordic Birth Basket.

Coverage of the diplomatic missions network to be handled among the Nordic and Baltic countries
The NB8 Foreign Ministers’ meeting was hosted by Minister Tuomioja on 29–30 August. The ministers discussed increasing the placement of their diplomats throughout the world so that they could work together in one another’s diplomatic missions. The coverage of the diplomatic missions network could thus be arranged in cooperation between the Nordic and Baltic countries. This would also bring added benefits, such as better coverage, flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

Finland and Latvia support the common European Union policy concerning Belarus
We will wait for the decisions of the European Union’s Foreign Ministers Meeting with regard to Belarus, Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Girts Valdis Kristovskis said at their joint press conference on 20 January. Both ministers feel that the current situation in Belarus is most unfortunate.

Stubb: Bilateral relations between Finland and Latvia extremely good
When Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb meets with his Latvian colleague, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins, international affairs are usually on the agenda. During Foreign Minister Riekstins’s visit to Helsinki on 17 February, however, the two ministers focused on bilateral relations. “Our bilateral relations enjoy a very good atmosphere,” said Foreign Minister Riekstins, who was visiting Finland at the invitation of Foreign Minister Stubb.

Baltic Sea Action Summit in Helsinki a success
The Baltic Sea Action Summit that was held in Helsinki on Wednesday, 10 February was a success in the opinion of the arrangers. The summit attracted a large and high-level group of participants to Finlandia Hall to tell about their commitments to protect the Baltic Sea. The summit was hosted by President of the Republic Tarja Halonen, Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and Mr Ilkka Herlin, the Chairman of the Baltic Sea Action Group, who together convened the summit.

Concern over the Baltic Sea has set actors in motion
The international Baltic Sea Action Summit will gather together heads of state or government from the Baltic Sea region, business leaders, representatives of foundations and other actors to meet in Helsinki on 10 February. “We must act now, for soon it may be too late,” says Jari Luoto, Ambassador for Baltic Sea Issues at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
