It is not worth applying for a passport right after getting Finnish citizenship

When an applicant, for example a former Finnish citizen or a descendant of one, is granted Finnish citizenship by declaration, the citizenship will come into force retroactively on the day the declaration was submitted. In practice this means that when a person gets a decision on Finnish citizenship he or she has already been a Finnish citizen for a while. However, he or she cannot be granted a Finnish passport until the information on citizenship can be seen in the Finnish Population Data System.

When you are applying for a passport, please bear in mind the time required to transfer the information. The passport application has to be submitted personally to the local police in Finland or to a Finnish mission abroad. In order to avoid unnecessary traveling it is worthwhile for an applicant living abroad to contact the Finnish mission in advance to make sure that the information on acquiring Finnish citizenship can be seen in the Finnish Population Data System.
