150 years from the birth of sculptor Emil Wikström

When you visit Helsinki you cannot avoid two works of Wikström just in the center of the city,  the men statues outside Helsinki Central railway station and the bear outside of the National museum.

Lyhdynkantajat

Emil Wikström (1864 –1942) was the most important Finnish sculptor of his time. Among his best known works are the memorials of Elias Lönnrot and Johan Vilhelm Snellman.

He sought inspiration and motifs for his art from his own country's cultural heritage and mythology.

Emil Wikström sculpted most of his work in Visavuori, his home and studio in Valkeakoski.  Visavuori was opened to the public as a museum in 1966.

Jenni Haukio, wife of the President of Finland, is the patron of the Emil Wikström 150 Years anniversary celebration.
