EU medical cards

From the beginning of June EU citizens will be able to use a new medical card when in Finland, enabling them to quick access to treatment.

The health card confirms that holders are covered by sickness insurance in one of the EU member states and that they have the right to immediate medical treatment while they are in any other member state.

The introduction of the cards will take place simultaneously, except in countries which have not previously used their own national medical cards. They will have a transfer period till the end of 2005 within which to switch to using the system of health cards.
