From the beginning of 2017 EU citizens register at Finnish Immigration Service

As of the beginning of 2017, registrations of EU citizens will be transferred from the police to the Finnish Immigration Service.

EU citizens can reside in Finland for three months without registering. If you stay in Finland for a longer period, you should register your right of residence at one of the service points (Link to another website.)of the Finnish Immigration Service within three months of the day you entered Finland.

The easiest way to apply is online

Submit your application online in the e-service Enter Finland(Link to another website.). Attach to your application a statement on what you do and the source of your means of support.

  • If you are employed, please attach a certificate of employment or a confirmation of engagement from your employer.
  • If you are an entrepreneur or a freelancer, please attach proof of what you do.
  • If you are a student, please attach proof that you are enrolled at an educational institution in Finland.
  • If you are not employed or studying, please attach proof of the source of your means of support.

You also must have a valid passport or identity card issued by your home country.

When you have submitted your application with attachments in Enter Finland, you should book an appointment at one of service points of the Finnish Immigration Service to prove your identity.

You will soon be able to pay for the registration with a credit card

The registration costs 54 euro. You can pay the processing fee in Enter Finland with your online bank codes and soon also with your credit card.

If you are applying with a paper form, you can pay the fee at one of the service points of the Finnish Immigration Service in cash or with the most common debit cards.

Nordic citizens register at the Local Register Office

Nordic (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Islandic) citizens are an exception, as they can register their right of residence directly at the Local Register Office. You can find more information on the website of the Local Register Office(Link to another website.).
