Finland and Latvia support the common European Union policy concerning Belarus
We will wait for the decisions of the European Union’s Foreign Ministers Meeting with regard to Belarus, Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Girts Valdis Kristovskis said at their joint press conference on 20 January. Both ministers feel that the current situation in Belarus is most unfortunate.

Baltic Sea Action Summit in Helsinki a success
The Baltic Sea Action Summit that was held in Helsinki on Wednesday, 10 February was a success in the opinion of the arrangers. The summit attracted a large and high-level group of participants to Finlandia Hall to tell about their commitments to protect the Baltic Sea. The summit was hosted by President of the Republic Tarja Halonen, Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and Mr Ilkka Herlin, the Chairman of the Baltic Sea Action Group, who together convened the summit.

Finland deepens relations with Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia
“This is the first time policy for this region has been compiled into one document,” Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb stated at the press conference held on Friday, 29 January to publicise Finland’s policy in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia. The policy includes assessments dealing with the region’s internal development and international position, bilateral relations between Finland and the countries of the region, and relations between the EU and the countries of the region.

Belarus a Northern Dimension partner?
The EU foreign ministers will draw up an interim review of the European Union’s relations with Belarus in November. During his visit to Finland, Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov of Belarus, hopes that the EU will abandon its remaining sanctions. Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb hopes that the country will proceed further in granting political liberties and would give up the use of capital punishment.
