Life in Finland

Bark bread

The exhibition illustrates Finland, which gained its Independence at 1917, by presenting 49 objects from different decades in Finland with casual, industrial and humorous examples. These objects describe different phases in Finland and tells about being a Finn. As themes are used climate, light, childhood, taste and aim to simple beauty.

These objects from Finland do not only mean products manufactured in Finland but they also tell about the life in Finland. What is necessary and self-evident to Finns, can be unusual and surprising for people in other countries. On the other hand, certain historical phases, like war, have brought similar challenges also to people elsewhere. The Finns have adapted the Northern climate with both everyday’s imagination and modern innovations.

What would be corresponding objects for you? What objects would you choose to represent your own life and your own culture at certain moments in your life?

What object would you choose for your age group or generation, what about your parents, grandparents or your children’s generation?

Exhibition Life in Finland is based on the exhibition "100 objects from Finland", wich circulated across the European museums in years 2017 and 2018 and was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Finland's Independence. The original online exhibition in available on the website www.100objects.fi
