Foreign Minister Tuomioja: Death of Finnish and other UN observers 'truly tragic'

Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja calls the news of the death of a Finnish and other international UN observers in Lebanon "truly tragic". On Wednesday morning Tuomioja flew to Rome where he will participate in the International Conference for Lebanon.

Israel´s surgical strikes seem to hit mainly everybody else than Hezbollah, said Tuomioja in the morning in Helsinki on his way to Rome. Hundreds of civilians and international personnel have been killed. This is not the way to reach military goals, he said.

President Tarja Halonen ja Foreign Minister Tuomioja both stated that they expect Israel to carry out an in-depth investigation of the air strike on a UN observer post in southern Lebanon which took place on Tuesday evening.

Four observers were killed in an airstrike to a UN observer post.
