Bulgaria is a full member of Schengen Area since 1.1.2025.
As a result of multiple years of process, Bulgaria and Romania became full Schengen members as of 1.1.2025. Schengen membership means that a person legally residing in member States can move freely within Schengen area without passport checks.
However, we always recommend travelling with a passport or an identity card, as the authorities have the right to verify your identity. In addition, the airline has its own rules on identity verification, which should be taken into account when travelling by air.
Schengen visa
So-called third-country nationals need a Schengen visa to enter the Schengen area. Schengen visas issued by Bulgaria and Romania after 31.3.2024 entitle to travelling in Schengen countries for a maximum period of 90 days in 180 days, in the same way as any other Schengen visas. More detailed instructions are available from the Bulgarian embassies and on the website of the Bulgarian Ministry for Foreign Affairs(Link to another website.).
