The reply of the Finnish government to the UN Human Rights Committee concerning the Nellim case

Press release 8/2006
17 January, 2006

The Finnish Government has yesterday, on 16 January, submitted its reply to the UN Human Rights Committee concerning the complaint filed about logging activities in the Nellim area in Finnish Lapland.

The reply concerns solely the admissibility of the complaint as a case for the committee.

The reply states that the authors of the complaint have not exhausted the national means of judicial protections available in the case, or handling of the case in them is not yet completed. Thus the complaint, being premature, should not be admitted under advisement in the committee, and, therefore, the committee should cancel the required interim measure, at least in case the authors of the complaint do not file a suit in a national court within a reasonable period of time.

If required, the Government will provide a reply concerning the subject matter of the complaint by mid-May.
