EU on the situation in Lebanon: Foreign Minister Tuomioja has been in contact with Kofi Annan and Fouad Siniora

The EU Presidency has expressed its shock over the Israeli air strikes on South Lebanon which have killed dozens of civilians, mainly women and children. The Presidency Statement given today reiterates the appeal for ending the hostilities immediately.

During the weekend, Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja has been in close communication with his colleagues in other EU countries and High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana on account of the situation. He spoke with Secretary-General Kofi Annan about the role of the UN in solving the conflict. In a telephone conversation with Tuomioja, Prime Minister Fouad Siniora conveyed the stand of the Lebanese government demanding immediate cessation of hostilities.
