The Finnish Illusion Exhibition

The Embassy of Finland is pleased to host The Finnish Illusion exhibition by three Finnish female artists: Ilona Cutts, Katja Tukiainen and Maria Wolfram from June 13 to August 26, 2018.

This trio of Finnish painters brings a sensitive, strong and feminine approach to their medium and subject matter. Their art is fearless and thoughtful. The presence of humor is evident. The Finnish Illusion exhibition consists of figurative paintings and poetic installations. With these works of art, they talk about the world we are living in, leaving the final interpretation to the viewer. This powerful trio conquered the Spruill Gallery of Atlanta in February 2018 and is now ready to continue their adventurous tour.

Ilona Cutts' paintings center on anthropomorphic creatures or girl like figures, surrounded by objects of obscure symbolic and ethereal meaning. Her interest in the concepts of time and “timelessness” are evident in her paintings, a juxtaposition of linear time, versus Spiritual time. Her paintings are exhibited internationally and in important Finnish collections such as the Oulu Museum of Modern Art in Finland.

Katja Tukiainen' primary language is painting and her basic color is pink. With her cute, strong and quick-witted girls, bright oil colors and eloquent brush strokes she talks about serious matters. Her paintings are included in many prestigious collections like KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art collection and Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation collection. Her works are exhibited internationally since mid-1990.

In Maria Wolfram’ art identity, interaction and power are returning topics. Materiality, experimentality and humor are important elements in her practice. Wolfram does not only draw inspiration from mythology and folklore but also from everyday encounters, and contemporary posing culture where people create a particular identity for themselves. Her paintings are included in many collections such as The Finnish State Collection and collections of Finnish foundations.

Exhibition open on following Saturdays from 11am to 4 pm:
