Fulbright interview with Annaleena Kangas

I am a mathematics, physics and chemistry teacher from Finland. I have been teaching in a vocational high school for ten years. I wanted to participate the Fulbright program to develop student-centered and self-directed learning strategies, learn more about different education systems and pedagogical approaches around the world as well as get a wider network of international teachers.

International cooperation is very important. The students and the problems we face in schools are very similar around the world. Nevertheless, teachers from different countries have such a different experiences and approaches and we can learn so much from each other and develop our schools. It is also important for the students to see people from different countries and learn new perspectives through communicating with them.

The wisdom I am going to bring back to Finland is sharing your own visions and working with others to achieve these visions.

One of the best things about Finnish culture is that you are not appreciated only by success. You are appreciated even though you would not have high education or a successful and long career in a high-ranking profession. In schools, we focus on skills and competences and not so much on testing and grades. The focus in Finnish education is in learning the skills and the knowledge you will need in the future.
