Finland’s three key themes are

1. Sustainable shipping – a necessity and an opportunity

Finland sees sustainable shipping as a necessity and as an opportunity. The clock is ticking due to climate change. We need measures to curb global warming and promote green growth. Finland aims to become carbon-neutral by 2035.

2. New technologies – improving safety, protecting environment and wellbeing

Embracing new technologies in shipping is essential. Digitalization and automation help to improve maritime safety, reduce emissions and offer better services. Finland promotes efforts to enable digitalization in the maritime industry.

3. Social dimension of shipping – creating opportunities

Finland is committed to promoting gender equality in the maritime industry. We need more women in shipping in order to address the global demand for competent crewmembers in the future.

Finland promotes technology transfer and work towards sustainable development through education. Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom organizes courses for students of the World Maritime University, many of whom are from developing countries.
