Finland punches above its weight in the worldwide university rankings conducted by CUWR

A new ranking by the Center for World University Rankings (CUWR) shows Finnish universities doing well compared to its counterparts around the world. Six Finnish universities made it into the top 500 universities globally in the rankings by CUWR. 10/14 of Finnish universities are among the top 10 % of the World Universities.


The Finnish universities included(Link to another website.) were University of Helsinki – which had the highest placement at #126, putting into the top 0.7 percent of universities globally –, Aalto University, University of Turku, Tampere University, University of Oulu and the University of Eastern Finland. Other Finnish universities that made the Global 2000 list, representing the top 10 percent of universities globally, are the University of Jyväskylä, LUT University, Åbo Akademi and Hanken School of Economics.

The Finnish universities’ high rankings are remarkable for a country of Finland’s size and reflect the quality of the country’s higher education, which is already world renown.

The list was topped by well-known American universities, with the top three universities being Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University. The highest-ranking Turkish university on the list was the Middle East Technical University (METU) at #627, with Hacettepe University close behind at #638. Other Turkish universities included on the list in the top 1000 university were Ankara University, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul University, Istanbul Technical University, Ege University, Çukurova University, Marmara University, Gazi University, most of which are cooperating with #TeamFinland.

CUWR ranked over 20 000 higher education institutions from 95 countries, which makes it the largest academic university ranking globally. The consulting organisation CUWR publishes the list annually, and it has been publishing the list since 2012. The rankings are based on the education provided, employability, faculty and research by the universities.
