Entry into Finland and crossing the border from Russia to Finland

The land border crossing points are working normally:

  • At the border crossing point of Niirala the opening hours for passenger traffic are 9.00−20.00 Finnish time.
  • At the border crossing points of Nuijamaa and Vaalimaa the opening hours for passenger traffic are 7.00−21.30 Finnish time. The border crossing point of Imatra is closed for passenger traffic.
  • At the border crossing points of Raja-Jooseppi and Salla the opening hours for passenger traffic are Mon−Fri 8.00−18.00 and Sat−Sun 9.00−17.00 Finnish time.
  • At the border crossing point of Vartius the opening hours for passenger traffic are 8.00−19.00 Finnish time.

Please note that if a passenger only transits through Finland, it is possible to cross the border also outside the regular opening hours in order to make it to the connecting flight/ferry etc. It is necessary to show transit documents at the border control.

The general conditions for entry must be in order. Admission is decided during the border control. You can find the requirements (including COVID-19) for entry from the website of Finnish Border Guard(Linkki toiselle web-sivustolle.).

The requirements do not apply to Finnish citizens or permanent residents of Finland returning to Finland. Neither do the requirement apply to those who enter Finland for essential or humanitarian reason. Please note that the essential or humanitarian reasons for travelling is always evaluated case by case during border control carried out by the Finnish Border Guard.

It is forbidden to cross the land border on foot. VR has announced(Linkki toiselle web-sivustolle.) that it will suspend the operation of the Allegro train for the time being from 28 March 2022.

There are still some bus companies operating from St. Peterburg to Finland. There are no citizenship restrictions when travelling to Finland by bus.
