Finland Supports UNESCO’s Work to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals on Education
On 5th December, Finland signed a significant funding agreement to support UNESCO’s flagship Capacity Development of Education (CapED) programme. Finland has been supporting the program since 2003.
During the signing ceremony with the Ambassador Pekka Puustinen UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova emphasized the central role of CapED in achieving sustainable development goals: “Finland’s support is important for realizing inclusive quality education and lifelong learning – especially in the least developed countries”.
The CapED-programme is concentrating on the capacity-building of the developing countries in order to achieve the education goal of the sustainable development Agenda 2030. The particular focus of the programme is on education planning and reforms, working life skills and on improving the quality of education through teachers. Gender equality is a cross-cutting theme of the whole programme.
Finland has been a long-standing supporter of the program, previously known as CapEFA. The program, renamed along with the launching of the UN’s Agenda 2030, is supporting the integration of sustainable development goals into the national education plans and monitoring systems.
Finland agrees that UNESCO has a crucial role in the implementation of the sustainable development goals. Finland is a candidate for the Executive Board of UNESCO in November 2017.
