EU Foreign Affairs Council to continue discussion on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine

EU foreign ministers will convene in Brussels on Monday 16 May. State Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johanna Sumuvuori will represent Finland at the meeting. The Foreign Affairs Council will focus on Russian aggression against Ukraine and on the Western Balkans.

EU foreign ministers will continue the discussion on Russian aggression against Ukraine. Finland strongly condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Finland responds to Russia’s actions as part of the European Union and emphasises the EU’s strong political, economic and humanitarian support to Ukraine.

The foreign ministers will also hold an informal discussion on the topic with Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba and Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly.

The Foreign Affairs Council will also discuss the impacts of the war in Ukraine on the Western Balkans and reinforced EU engagement in Western Balkan countries. The European Union is the most important supporter, trading partner and investor to the Western Balkan countries. Additionally, the foreign ministers of the Western Balkan countries will attend an informal lunch meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council.

An EU–Canada Joint Ministerial Committee meeting will be held in connection with the Foreign Affairs Council. Canada is an important partner for both the EU and Finland.
