The Finnish delegation to the first UN Environment Assembly was led by Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto. He emphasised the importance of the meeting to the strengthening of the environmental dimension in the future Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird will visit Finland on 26 June and meet Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja.

Finland will donate additional EUR 1.5 million in humanitarian assistance for the Central African Republic, where about a half of the population is in need of humanitarian aid. More than 560,000 people have been forced out of their homes. Since the beginning of the conflict, approximately 370,000 people have fled to the neighbouring countries.

In the Government appointed by the President of the Republic on 24 June, Lenita Toivakka was named the new Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade. Alexander Stubb, her predecessor, was named Prime Minister.

Finland supports the UN World Food Programme’s (WFP) assistance work in Iraq by donating EUR 500,000. The assistance is directed to displaced people in Iraq. Some 500,000 people have been forced to leave their homes, becoming displaced. The number of displaced people in Iraq is predicted to grow.
