Press release 170/2009
23 June, 2009

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen will participate in the high-level UN Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis in New York on 25 June. Väyrynen will chair the Finnish delegation and deliver an address at the general debate of the conference.

The main themes of the conference include the analysis of the impact of the world economic crisis on development and bringing about common measures for mitigating the effects; the role of the UN and its member states in the reform of the international economic and financial architecture; and exploitation of the UN system in rising the challenges of the economic crisis.

Finland considers it important that the conference focuses specifically on mitigation of the negative effects of the economic crisis in the least developed developing countries and fragile states. The work done by the UN for reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development is of primary importance especially under the prevailing circumstances, in which the economic crisis most seriously affects the position of the poorest people of the world.
