On Wednesday 13 March, the President of the Republic and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the UN Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) which will be held in New York on 18–28 March. The Finnish delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja.

The Conference aims at a comprehensive and legally binding Arms Trade Treaty to regulate the international trade in conventional arms. The ATT is to contain strong commitments to human rights and international humanitarian law in the export of arms. The treaty would also have impact on reducing arms trafficking. Finland, as one of the seven initiating countries, has participated in the preparations for the ATT since 2006.
