23 January, 2009

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb will receive the Finnish Foreign Policy Youth Forum’s evaluation of Finland’s foreign and security policy at its publication event, to take place at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, 27 January from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

In its evaluation the Youth Forum highlights issues that it thinks should be discussed in handling of the Government Security and Defence Policy Report released today. The section that deals with institutions will be presented by Johan Ekman, Chair of the Youth Forum. The sections on global threats and national defence will be presented by Youth Forum members Heta Heiskanen and Joonas Turunen. The departure points of the three-part evaluation report will be presented by Youth Forum member Mikko Lipsanen.

Other Youth Forum members, civil society organisations and Foreign Ministry representatives will also give their comments at the event. In addition, Eero Heinäluoma and Ilkka Kanerva, both members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Finnish Parliament, will comment on the Youth Forum’s evaluation.

Kanerva appointed the Finnish Foreign Policy Youth Forum to evaluate Finland’s foreign and security policy environment while he was Minister for Foreign Affairs. Members for the Youth Forum were sought through advertisements; 420 applications were received. In February 2008 the Ministry for Foreign Affairs appointed the members of the Youth Forum on the basis of preparatory work done by the Finnish Youth Co-operation – Allianssi. The Youth Forum has 28 members ranging in age from 18 to 29 years.
