Press release 60/2016
5 April 2016

Finland confirmed its support to the most fragile and conflict-affected countries in cooperation with the other donor countries. The New Deal meeting (IDPS, International Dialogue on Peacebuilding and Statebuilding) in Stockholm on 5 April reaffirmed the commitment of the g7+ group of countries affected by conflict and fragility, donor countries, and civil society organisations to cooperation aiming to resolve conflicts and to promote development. Minister for International Development Cooperation Isabella Lövin hosted the meeting and the adoption of the Stockholm Declaration, in which the participants strengthen their commitment to supporting fragile states and to the prevention of conflicts.

The Declaration stresses the focus on fragile states and the importance of addressing the root causes of conflict, issues that are central also in Finland's development policy. Finland has directed its development cooperation to fragile states and in 2015 about 56 per cent of Finland's bilateral development cooperation appropriations were channelled to fragile of conflict-affected countries.

The g7+ group, which convenes fragile countries, met for their annual meeting in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 23 - 24 March. The key message of the meeting to the donors was the importance of a sound economic foundation and job creation in the emerging economies, especially for the young.  Jobs create not only economic growth but also give hope for individuals of a future in their own country. The opportunity to gain a living and have a future in the home country is a central factor influencing the migratory flows.

Finland's representative at the meeting was Under-Secretary of State Elina Kalkku.
