Finland reports to the UN about women's rights

Finland has submitted the seventh periodic report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women on the execution of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The reporting period is from October 2007 to September 2011.

The report gives an account of the legislative, legal and administrative measures targeted to eliminating discrimination against women and responds to the concluding observations and recommendations by the Committee. Among other topics, the report discusses development of equality legislation, measures for promoting equality of women in the labour market and activities for eliminating discrimination of female immigrants and women belonging to other minority groups.

In July 2010, Finland submitted a detailed report requested by the Committee on executing the recommendations related to violence against women.

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was adopted in 1979, and Finland ratified the Convention in 1986.

The periodic report was prepared in the Foreign Ministry Unit for Human Rights Courts and Conventions (OIK-40) in cooperation with other ministries and authorities. NGOs were given the opportunity to provide their views during preparation of the report.

The CEDAW Committee will examine the Finnish country report in the autumn of 2014 at the earliest.
