Finland to participate in NATO Crisis Management Exercise CMX16

Press release 39/2016
2 March 2016

Finland will participate in NATO’s Crisis Management Exercise 2016 (CMX16) on 9-16 March as a partner country. CMX is NATO's regularly-held decision-making and consultation exercise which involves no deployed forces. Finland has participated in CMX exercises since 1998, when they have been open to Finland as a partner country.

In addition to the Allies, this year Finland and Sweden will participate in the exercise as partners. The European Union will observe the exercise. The exercise will involve civilian and military staffs in Allied and partner capitals, NATO Headquarters and Strategic Commands. Participants from Finland include the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Mission of Finland to NATO in Brussels, the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Command and other authorities as needed.

The exercise will be based on a fictitious scenario in which the participants deal with issues relating to NATO's collective defence and to other areas of cooperation. Hybrid threats and addressing them will play a central role in the exercise. Finland’s objective is to exercise NATO partner participation in close collaboration with Sweden as well as related national preparation.
