Finland’s role in peace mediation can be diversified
Press release 144/2010
6 May 2010
Finland already has many peace mediation accomplishments to present, but according to the study entitled “Peace Mediation – Finland’s Guidelines” released by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on 6 May, the country’s peace mediation role can be strengthened further. Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb hosted the event held to launch the publication, which was also attended by President Martti Ahtisaari.
The study states that peace mediation is an increasingly important element of international crisis prevention. The recommendations presented in the study pertain to strengthening Finland’s peace mediation capacity, Finland’s support for international actors and to Finland’s national peace mediation activity.
The expertise of Finnish non-governmental organisations was used extensively in preparing the study. Finland supports strengthening of these organisations’ peace mediation structures.
