EU Presidency statement on the situation in Chad
Press release 494/2006
28 November, 2006
The Presidency of the European Union expresses its grave concern regarding the recent attacks by armed groups in eastern Chad and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The attacks pose a serious threat to the stability of the entire sub-region and the Presidency underlines the urgent need to avoid further escalation and to establish an international presence in the Darfur border region.
The Presidency firmly condemns all attempts at destabilisation by force and recalls that only a peaceful political dialogue based on the respect of constitutional provisions can bring a solution to the current crisis. It urges all parties to guarantee the security of international humanitarian efforts in the region.
