Nordic Foreign Ministers convened in Copenhagen
Press release 297/2011
2 November 2011
The Nordic foreign ministers, who gathered in Copenhagen, discussed the situation in North Africa and Palestine. Strengthening of women’s rights, in particular, was stressed during the discussion. With regard to the situation in Palestine, concern was expressed over Israel’s announcement on increased settlement. As to Palestine’s application for membership of the UN, the primary aim is a common EU position, which Norway and Iceland could also stand behind. If this is not possible, there will be close coordination to arrive at a joint Nordic position.
The foreign ministers also discussed implementation of the Stoltenberg report. At the meeting, it was decided to support the establishment of a cooperation network for Nordic information security authorities. Closer diplomatic mission cooperation between the Nordic countries is also under preparation.
In 2011 Finland has held the chairmanship of the Nordic foreign and security policy cooperation. The meeting in Copenhagen was this season’s last foreign ministers’ meeting.
Acting in the capacity of chairman, Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja submitted the foreign policy report to the Nordic Council on behalf of all the Nordic countries.
