Minister Väyrynen to attend the Economic and Social Council meeting in New York

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen will take part in the Annual Ministerial Review sessions of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York on 28–29 June. Equality issues are the theme for the Annual Ministerial Review this year. Progress in implementing the UN Millennium Development Goals, in particular, will be an important topic of debate. The Annual Ministerial Review sessions will be opened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and ECOSOC President Hamidon Ali.

Minister Väyrynen is one of three keynote speakers at the High-Level Development Cooperation Forum that will be held in conjunction with the Annual Ministerial Review. The other keynote speakers are EU Commissioner for Development Piebalgs and the Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce. The Development Cooperation Forum will focus especially on the effectiveness and coherence of international development cooperation.

During his trip Minister Väyrynen will also meet, among others, with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark and UN Under-Secretary-General Sha Zukang.
