Current situation in Libya

On Monday, 29 August, the President of the Republic and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the situation in Libya and the measures taken by the international community to alleviate the crisis. In Finland, preparations are underway to provide humanitarian assistance to the region, and Finland is ready to consider participation in efforts to stabilise the crisis.

The meeting also discussed Finland’s participation in the United Nations’ UNIFIL operation in Lebanon with 200 soldiers in the first half of 2012 together with Ireland. Finland is also preparing to continue its participation in the EU’s military training mission (EUTM) in Africa. EUTM provides training for Somali security forces supporting the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia outside the country. Finland’s continued participation in Afghanistan will be assessed separately later on in the autumn.
