Effects of the volcanic eruption in Iceland on travel
Press release 116/2010
18 April 2010
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is carefully following the restrictions on air traffic resulting from the volcanic eruption in Iceland and the consequent ash cloud. The Ministry will continue its contacts and cooperation with Finnish travel agencies.
The 24/7 service of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and of Finnish diplomatic missions in Europe have received dozens of enquiries. The diplomatic missions advise travellers and can provide assistance, such as forwarding funds and providing contact information for commercial money transfer services.
Holiday-makers on package trips should contact their own tour organizer. People travelling on their own are advised to contact the airline that has issued their ticket, to follow the Finavia, Eurocontrol and Finnish Meteorological Institute websites and to check the terms of their insurance coverage with their insurance company. The coverage provided by travel insurance may vary, depending on the company and the terms of its insurance. Travellers should see to the validity of their visas themselves.
