29.4.2013

Facilitator for the conference on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction, Under-Secretary of State Jaakko Laajava gave an interim report to the States parties of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in Geneva on 29 April 2013.

According to Laajava, the premises for holding the conference originally planned for 2012 still exist. However, the regional States' views regarding the conference need to converge further. Laajava and the conveners of the conference, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Russia, United Kingdom and United States, will continue consulting with the States of the region to find common ground and working towards the earliest possible convening of the conference.

Finland has announced it is prepared to host the conference without delay once convened.
