The Embassy of Finland in Windhoek is looking for a full-time assistant for the economic cooperation portfolio. Applications with resumes must be sent no later than 27 March, COB.

Position Title: Assistant, Economic Cooperation

Duty Station: Embassy of Finland in Windhoek, Namibia

Proposed Starting Date: 1 May 2024

The main objective of the Embassy of Finland in Windhoek is to maintain and strengthen the bilateral relations between Finland and Namibia. This refers to political and economic relations as well as to cooperation in the fields of local development, culture, science and research, among else.

In the field of economic cooperation, the Embassy of Finland promotes business and investment opportunities and international cooperation of Finnish enterprises, educational institutions and other relevant stakeholders in Finland through the Team Finland network, in close cooperation with Namibian partners. The Embassy advances the country image of Finland in Namibia, as well as promotes Finnish expertise and Finnish culture in the country. The Embassy also supports the Namibian civil society by working closely together with non-governmental organizations and civil society actors.

The duties of the assistant include a wide variety of tasks, such as promoting Namibian market opportunities to Finnish companies, preparing meetings, events and visits , conducting various administrative tasks, assisting in reporting, as well as assisting in the management of the Embassy’s development cooperation projects.

The assistant will also produce content for the Embassy’s social media channels and the mission's website, respond to inquiries to the mission and maintain databases. The work requires travelling in Namibia, and occasionally outside the country.

The job requires the ability to work independently, as well as excellent coordination and cooperation skills. The position requires IT literacy, including knowledge of the most common IT software. Applicants for the position are required to have a lower university degree and excellent oral and written skills in English. Knowledge of Finnish is an advantage.

The assistant is employed as a locally contracted employee, and the conditions of the employment comply with Namibian Labour Law. The successful candidate will require a work permit for working in Namibia.

The training of the person selected for the position takes place on-the-job at the Finnish Embassy in Windhoek and, if necessary, at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Helsinki.

 

Core Functions / Responsibilities

* Assisting in Team Finland (trade promotion) work in Namibia and in Angola

* Assisting in reporting and in the preparation of trade and economy-related material

* Embassy’s focal point for education related cooperation

* Responsible for the Embassy’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and customer feedback surveys

* Participation in the Embassy’s country image and communication work for social media and producing media summaries

* Assisting in arranging events, visits and meetings

* Administrative tasks, such as maintaining databases and conducting small procurement

* Responding to local inquiries (business partnership proposals, study in Finland opportunities)

* Assisting with development cooperation project management

* Substitute for the Embassy’s Coordinator

* Any other tasks assigned by the Head of Mission

 

Required Qualifications and Previous Experience

Education

Completed lower University degree, from an accredited academic institution, preferably in International Relations, Development Studies, Economics, Business Administration, Communications, Journalism, Economics or other relevant sector.

Experience

Experience in similar roles in economic cooperation, trade promotion and international development is considered an advantage.

Knowledge and experience particularly in energy, mining, circular economy and education are considered an advantage.

Previous experience from embassies, international organisations, trade-oriented industries or government administration is considered an advantage.

Proven experience in social media communications is required (Facebook, X).

Skills

Profound organisational, time-management and multi-tasking skills are required in a fast-paced operational environment.

Excellent social and teamwork skills are required.

High motivation and willingness for learning and self-development are considered highly positively.

Profound IT skills, in particular on the use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint), and willingness to adopt and learn new IT applications required.

Languages

Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

Knowledge of the Finnish language is an advantage.
