Foreign Minister Tuomioja signed optional protocols to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja signed two optional protocols to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child on Thursday, 7 September, in New York during the UN Millennium Summit.

Finland has actively participated in the drafting of the two optional protocols protecting children, namely the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict and the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography.

Both protocols were adopted at the UN General Assembly in May 2000 and the protocols were opened for signature in connection with the UN General Assembly´s Beijing+5 special session in June. In addition to Finland, the majority of the other EU countries also signed the protocols during the summit.

Finland plans to ratify the protocols before summer 2001.
