Current security situation to be discussed during Foreign Minister Haavisto’s visit to Washington DC

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will visit Washington DC on 25–27 May. He will meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and speak with representatives of the US administration and Congress. In addition, Minister Haavisto will discuss Finland’s views on transatlantic security at an event held at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), which is a non-profit policy research organisation focusing on security policy.

Foreign Minister Haavisto and Secretary of State Blinken will discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland’s application for membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, European security, and the bilateral relations between Finland and the United States.

“In the current security situation, it is important to deepen both bilateral and transatlantic cooperation. Finland appreciates the United States’ strong role in NATO and its commitment to European security, as well as the support that the United States has given to Finland’s NATO membership. We will continue our firm support to Ukraine in cooperation with the EU and our partners,” says Foreign Minister Haavisto.
