Statement by Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja on the synagogue attack in Jerusalem

The atrocious attack in the Har Nof synagogue yesterday in Jerusalem has claimed the lives of five people. I strongly condemn the terrorist attack and wish to express my condolences to the families of the victims.

I appeal to the leaders of the region to calm down the situation in order to prevent its escalation. All parties should refrain from retaliatory attacks, collective punishment and any action against the principles of the rule of law which would further deteriorate the situation. Violence is not a solution, and terrorist attacks only alienate further the possibility of achieving a peaceful solution.

There is an urgent need for the parties to continue the peace negotiations and commit themselves to a negotiated two-state solution, which is the only way to achieve a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
