Finns Abroad – how to add your contact information on Embassy’s mailing list

European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GPDR) was implemented on 25th of May 2018. With the new regulation the Embassy permanently deleted the old register data of the Finns abroad. You can inform about your residence in the area by filling out the online travel notification at www.matkustusilmoitus.fi.

Despite of its name, the online travel notification(Link to another website.) (Opens New Window) is also used for subscribing the Embassy mailing list.

With the registration you will be contacted in the crisis situation. You also have a possibility to register yourself for the mailing list of the Embassy’s events.

It is important to note, however, that the travel notification is not an official notification of moving abroad. You have to inform the authorities if you are leaving Finland to move abroad, moving to Finland from abroad or changing your address abroad. Finnish citizens staying abroad have the legal obligation to report any changes to their personal data during their time abroad, including the birth of a child, marriage, divorce, and changes of name and address. More information on official notification on Digital and Population Data Services Agency website(Link to another website.) (Opens New Window).

If you live abroad temporarily or permanently, this is how you fill out the travel notification:

1. Travellers

Fill in your personal information. You can also add your family members in the same notification. If you would like them to get their own notifications from the Embassy, add everyone’s email address in the form.

2. Destinations

Fill in your home town and/or address. If you are already living here, enter today’s date. If you live permanently here, you can leave the departure date empty.

3. Contact information

Fill in the contact details you would like Embassy to to reach you from in the possible crisis situation. If you live here permanently, or are about to move here, please tick the “destination country is my official place of residence”. After you have ticked the box, a follow-up question will appear. If you would like to join the Embassy mailing list, give the Embassy the permit to use your personal data for purposes other than sending crisis-related information.

4. Review and send

Check that your information is correct and submit the form.
