Concern about Haiti and Iran, optimism about Ukraine
When the foreign ministers of the European Union convened at the Foreign Affairs Council on Monday, 22 February, the meeting was coloured by concern about the humanitarian situation in Haiti and suspicions of a nuclear weapons programme in Iran. “The greatest concern is that a de facto nuclear arms race will begin in the Middle East,” Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb said in Brussels. The optimistic discussion on Ukraine brought a positive note to the Foreign Affairs Council meeting.

Ashton chaired her first Foreign Ministers Meeting successfully
“I wished her good luck and pointed out that only Cathy and 27 male Foreign Ministers were present. One could ask what the Ombudsman for Equality would say about that,” Minister Stubb said jokingly at the end of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday. In a more serious vein, Stubb stated that the work of High Representative Ashton had got off to a good or actually an excellent start. Already at her first meeting of Foreign Ministers, Ashton had an extensive agenda.

EU Foreign Ministers heading for the European Council summit with a wide range of affairs
On Monday, 15 June, the Foreign Ministers of the European Union were up to their ears in work with the Middle East, the Western Balkans as well as the preparations for the approaching EU Council summit. Foreign Minister Stubb and Minister of Migration and European Affairs Astrid Thors believe that the Member States will give their approval for the re-appointment of President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso as early as at the Thursday-Friday summit.
