Finland to Introduce "Phonescoping" at the European Union Cultural Weeks

New Delhi, November 23, 2007: Bohemian waxwing in post-party mood, hooded crow at twilight. Sounds like a Saturday night in South Delhi? Not this time. 20 images from the Phonescoping Exhibition which is Finland's contribution to the European Union Cultural Weeks will be on display in New Delhi from 23 - 29 November. The exhibition is a part of the fortnight-long European Union Cultural Weeks that started on November 21.

Phonescoping, a technique developed by the Finnish photographer Tommi Laurinsalo, has given a new dimension to bird photography. A keen birdwatcher and photographer, Tommi realised the possibilities of using a mobile phone to capture birds in their natural environment using a variety of Nokia's multimedia devices. His breathtaking collection will be displayed at an unusual venue, the Rajiv Chowk Metro Station. Supported by Nokia India, this is the first cultural event ever organised inside the Delhi Metro premises. The exhibition will be on display during the metro opening hours from 6.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m.

Phonescoping involves attaching a telescope to an advanced mobile handset with an integrated camera. The unique technique allows one to click professional, high resolution images anytime, anywhere using a mobile camera. The quality of pictures is good for usage in internet or other electronic media, and the sharing of pictures is easy if the phone is MMS enabled.

Enabling photography irrespective of time and place, the camera phone has brought distinct benefits to the bird-watching community. Never again will birdwatchers miss the opportunity to capture an image of a rare species. What more, the images can be quickly and easily shared over MMS or email.

Tommi Laurinsalo shared, "I am excited about my exhibition in India and eager to show bird enthusiasts how to combine high technology with nature. I started my Phonescoping experiments a few years ago with Nokia's 6000 and 7000 series phones and later moved to the high-end phones, namely Nseries devices, to make the quality of my photographs sharper. I have had a great experience of working on Nokia’s range of multimedia devices that not only allow a great image quality but also ease of use.”

Added Mr. Laurinsalo, “One ofmy favorite pictures is that of the Bohemian waxwing. These birds are funny creatures and although they have a good resistance against alcohol, fermented rowanberries sometimes take them by surprise. They fly around drunk knocking against trees and windows. And after all the berries have been consumed, they head out for new adventures."

Hon’ble Ambassador of Finland Asko Numminen said, “Finland is known as a global leader in the field of telecommunications. At the same time, Finland is also a country which respects and conserves its nature with great care. For us, high technology and environmental values go hand in hand. This exhibition is a wonderful manifestation of this confluence.”

Mr. Vineet Taneja, Business Director, Multimedia, Nokia India said, “Nokia has always been at the forefront of enriching the mobile multimedia experience and imaging plays a key role as part of our proposition. We believe in empowering people with the ability to capture their experiences and share them with the world wherever, whether it’s about incorporating advanced imaging features or integrating top class accessories such as the Carl Zeiss lens.”

“The splendid work showcased here today is a testimony to this fact and we are glad that our high end Nokia imaging devices have rendered a world class photography experience”he added.
