Exhibition "Sitting on Green Gold" in Zagreb

The Etnographic museum of Zagreb will host the Finnish exhibition called "Sitting on Green Gold - Chairs From Finland" in April 27 - July 9, 2006. The exhibition presents how Finns have been dealing with the richness that the forests offer.

In Finland, wood has always had manifold uses. Woodwork and woodcarving and knowledge of the material have been vital to the Finnish people. Innovations, repair work and applications have first been made of wood and only after that of other materials. Access to the familiar raw material has led people to use wood. The exhibition presents not only some history but also examples of today’s life here in Finland, in the land of green gold.

Sitting on Green Gold gives an excellent cross-section of Finnish history and the chairs act in a big role in the exhibition. They are the examples that make the history more concrete and present the development that the Finnish society has gone through. The selection of chairs start from an old stump chair and end with a chair that is formed out of plywood using computer assistance. Some of the chairs are designed by famous Finnish names (Alvar Aalto, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Antti Nurmesniemi), some are from young designers starting their promising career. It is even possible to try and have a seat on some of the chairs.
