Parliament celebrates its centennial in 2006-2007

The Parliament of Finland celebrates its centennial in 2006 and 2007. The 100th anniversary of the approval of the Parliament Act and Election Act by the Diet will take place on June 1st 2006.

On May 23rd 2007 is the 100th anniversary of the first plenary session of Finland's unicameral Parliament.
The theme of the centennial is "The right to vote - trust in law. One hundred years of Finnish democracy."

The centennial focuses on the parliamentary reform of the early 20th century and the introduction of equal and universal suffrage and full political rights for women. The centennial will be celebrated nationally and internationally, as well as bilingually in Finnish and Swedish.

Parliament will hold two centennial sessions, on June 1st 2006 and May 23rd 2007. The Youth Parliament was on March 17th 2006.

In connection with the centennial a commemorative stamp, commemorative coins and a commemorative medal are issued. On May 23rd 2006 a statue was unveiled to honour the work of female MPs. SuomiAreena event will be held in summer 2006 in Pori and a new opera will be premiered in summer 2007 in Savonlinna. The theme will also be visible in education. Parliamentary elections will be held on March 18th 2007.
