Tarja Halonen re-elected

Tarja Halonen will continue as the President of the Republic of Finland for a second term. President Halonen received 51.8 percent of the vote against 48.2 percent for National Coalition Party candidate Sauli Niinistö.

According to preliminary results, Halonen won her challenger, Sauli Niinistö of the National Coalition Party, by 112 886 votes. Niinistö received a slightly greater share of the votes on the actual polling day, but the number of votes was not high enough to outstrip those of Halonen.

The President will be inaugurated on 1 March. The term of office is six years.
