PISA - International Conference in Helsinki 14 - 16 March 2005

Finland once again came out top in the OECD's latest PISA study of learning results among 15-year olds, with high performances in mathematics, science, mother tongue and problem solving. Due to the wide international interest, the National Board of Education and the University of Helsinki will organise a conference on the Finnish education and teacher training systems in relation to the Pisa studies from 14th to 16th March 2005 in Helsinki, Finland.

Target group is central stakeholders in education; policy makers and school management (state and local authorities and principals), representatives of teacher's unions and associations of principals, teacher trainers and researchers.

Aim of the Conference is to give the participants a brief but comprehensive insight into the Finnish education system, including teacher training and curriculum development.

The main issues presented at the conference are
- reasons behind the school reforms in Finland
- the structure of the Finnish education system
- governance and administration
- curriculum processes(national core curricula/local and school based curricula)
- teacher education, pre-service and in-service training
- arrangements in special and remedial education
- evaluation of learning results
- future challenges
