LAHTI - Ski Games and UNICEF city

Now when Sotshi is having the Winter Olympics it is good to remember an another winter games city, the city of Lahti, which is known for its world class sporting event Lahti Ski Games.

This year the games are held one week after the Winter Olympics, on 28.2.-2.3.2014. Already 25 countries have signed up to Lahti Ski Games to compete in ski jumping, cross country and Nordic combined world cups. President Sauli Niinistö will be the patron for the games.



Unicef city 2014

Lahti is also a UNICEF city 2014 and so the Ski Games are taking a part in theme year.. "Our objective is to use concrete means to rise child-friendliness in our city, as well as global responsibility", says Maritta Vuorinen, Director of the Civilization Industry. Lahti UNICEF city 2014 and Lahti Ski Games will work together in the upcoming competitions. " What would be a better for of cooperation than to offer experiences together, as a part of Lahti Ski Games's Sunday – where the programme is designed to match the needs of the families with children", tells Jesse Kiuru, Event Director of the Lahti Ski Games.

Lahti has over 100 000 residents making it the ninth largest city in Finland and it is part of the Helsinki metropolitan area. Location along a busy railway line and at the junction of several highways is superb. Everything is but a short distance away, Helsinki less than an hour and St.Petersburg by train only 2.5 hours.



University of Applied Scieces 

In Lahti there is also a University of Applied Sciences, which is quite international, this spring the University welcomes 90 new exchange students from all over he world.

Together with exchange students who continue their studies from the autumn semester this international group 107 exchange students represents 28 different countries and 34 nationalities. The biggest groups come from Germany, France, Italy, South Korea and the UK.
